I just finished Willa Cather’s book O Pioneers. I had never read any of her books, and I searched for early American history fiction on Amazon. I found this kindle book for free (yay!) and downloaded it for a quick weekend read. It was really very good. Ms. Cather had a really poetic way of writing that captured images and emotions in a wonderful way. I don’t usually like wordy, elaborate descriptions in books, but this one was concise, yet full of imagery. About a year ago I re-read all of the Little House books, and this book brought back many memories of the ways early settlers struggled to survive. It didn’t focus on the day-to-day life of the pioneers, but wove together a family’s story over about 25 years. It wasn’t life-changing, but if you want a quick, easy read that gives a glimpse into pioneer life, give it a go.
